Feb 28, Adela Cacovean rated it it was amazing Shelves: Originally published on my blog: I only delayed writing the review of this last book because I was very caught up in working on my very first novel. It is full of surprises and also the key to solving the puzzle formed by the prequels.
Who is the one who gives the Checkmate? You can only find out by reading it. So many incredible things happening in this book, I barely manage not to spoil it for you, dear review reader! Let me just say this: Toby, I knew your role was much more important than we were led to believe.
I love my instincts! Rhyn and Katie were awesome as always, I could actually feel how worried they were for each other. With lots of unexpected turns of events, how could I get bored? Finding the balance and adding the right amounts of everything in a YA book may be tricky, but Lizzy Ford managed to find the perfect recipe with the Rhyn series! From the annoying characters that I loved to hate, to the amazing protagonists, the characters all seem very realistic, despite this being a Fantasy book.
I recommend it with all my heart to lovers of this genre. View 1 comment. Feb 02, Ashley Stoyanoff rated it it was amazing. There was just some much going on in this series.
Demons, Immortals, Death. There was a tone of danger, and loads of tension. And Ford pulled it all together flawlessly. I never had a second where I was confused or lost, only hours of spine-tingling suspense. Rhyn really steps up in this book. Not only does he have a war to fight, and a counsel of brothers who do not believe in him to keep together, but he also gets forced to decide between the fate of the world and Katie.
I loved, loved, loved every minute of it. All I can say is thank goodness Ford has decided to continue on with the Rhyn Eternal series. I definitely need more of these characters! I loved this book!! In we continue the story of Rhyn, an Immortal, and Katie, a mortal. Gabriel is guiding Katie through the Underworld so that she can be reunited with her Mate-Rhyn. Rhyn believes that Katie is dead and is vent on destroying himself.
Lizzy Fird is an amazing writer who has decided to continue the story of Rhyn, Katie and several other characters from the Rhyn Trilogy.
I am thrilled with this and can not wait until September when the first book in the new series is released. I I loved this book!! I enjoy reading books written by Lizzy because her stories are always full of action and love; they keep the reader interested until the very end and always wanting more.
Thanks Lizzy!! Apr 22, D. I have said that books they draw my emotions are good, this was excellent! The complexity of the characters are astounding. Ford has brought us a story of 7 immortals, year old baby angel, and our dear Katie. Now throw in death and her assassin and we have a story! All of this pales in comparison to the nasty vile Sasha! What a wonderful series she has created for us.
Who could imagine that getting pulled over by the cops could have started on this path. When the everyday meets Magic and I have said that books they draw my emotions are good, this was excellent! When the everyday meets Magic and Katie's life changes in the blink of an eye. All at once she is thrown into a life where she is a mother of a 5 years old and no idea how that has happen. Yes you read that correctly.. She has a child, that everyone in her life knows about but her.
You figure that out. Katie begins to fall in a spiral that she will soon find herself trapped in Hell. Oh MY! Keeping up with me? Are you dying here.. Trust me! Keep reading: Katie she faces all these bizarre changes in her life, will eventually meet some people only dreams create. Torture and horrible things. This series is going to take you for a ride that you have never been on before. Characters you will love and hate.. Torture and I cannot even begin to do this justice.
So my advice, is not to sit in the world you feel comfortable in, but jump into Katie's world and live through her. Your enjoyment will be so much better.
Have patience with this amazing story. The questions that you will form, will all be answered in time. Also a note to readers, Lizzy Ford has given us one more fantastic bit, she is continuing The Rhyn series. I do not know if you seen the cover but man you will want to polish his scythe with your Listen to me, read it and you will not regret it.
So this is the third part to an amazing trilogy about Ryn and Katie. But don't worry. This isn't the end of the series, more like the creation of Rhyn and Katie. Which, in my opinion, totally rocks! We begin with Katie being trapped in the underworld. Death hasn't claimed her soul and her top assassin is trying to lead her back to earth before she becomes dead-dead. Katie is followed by Rhyn's dead brother, but only she can see him. She begins to doubt everything, including her guide that is sta So this is the third part to an amazing trilogy about Ryn and Katie.
She begins to doubt everything, including her guide that is starting to act funny, and forgets is way. Is it just her or are things not as they seem? Rhyn, meanwhile is forced into a suicide mission to reclaim his brother's house. His older brother asked him to do this knowing he probably wouldn't make it out alive. Which was fine for both of them. But their baby angel has other ideas. He jumps into the portal before Rhyn, which causes Rhyn to redirect his suicide mission to a rescue one.
It seems that everyone has it out for Rhyn to ultimately fail and die. Will Rhyn allow his own fate to be manipulated? Death holds all the cards in this game of life.
It is her test for Rhyn that separates the lovers, and Rhyn must pass or forfeit his life. The only one who knows what that test will be is Death. But she has other roles to play. Well, luckily, I have book 2, Katie's Hope. But I can't start it tonight.
We all know that one page turns into one chapter turns into one whole book, I mean series! Poor Katie. She wakes up, having a rough day to start: And then suddenly this grubby little kid is following her and calling her mama. She tries to shake the kid loose, ends up at the police station, and lo and behold it's HER kid, complete with I. She gets home finally, freaking out a bit, only to call her sister who asks if she's having one of her amnesia episodes again.
So crappy day, and then you find out that not only are you the mother of a 5 year old at the age of 18, but that child was the product of a rape and beating so bad that it left you with stress amnesia.
Oh, and that kid? He is an angel and talks to Gabriel, the Death Dealer and happily informs Katie that he sees Gabriel all the time, usually in each life when Gabriel comes to take his mama. O Pretty sure Katie was screaming: I know I would've been!
So from there, and sorry but I'm gonna sum up because that's what I do: Katie is a hot commodity. Rhyn was banished to hell and kept there by his sadistic, traitorous brother, Sasha. Death tells Gabriel that this human, Katie, is gonna be his mate.
Rhyn has ONE chance not to mess up, not to obliterate the world, or he'll suffer a true death. A death there is no coming back from because, hey, Death is all powerful and being immortal doesn't mean squat if you're on her list. Rhyn's family is messed up and we only get to see a few of them. Katie is attacked repeatedly, even Rhyn isn't really a knight in shining armor, but ohhhhh the potential is there.
This book is ripe with characters: I need to get on to book 2, but that's next week for the club read. Doesn't matter what you're doing you think about it and are desperate to get back to it.
With some books you expect this. The cover, the blurb and the title are all kinds of awesome and you just know you're gonna be in for a treat. What's even better though is when you don't expect it, and the awesomeness comes out of nowhere.
Katie's Hellion, to me, is one of those books. Here's how I stumbled upon this little treasure. I was perusing site the other day and Katie's Hellion was up as a free read. Why not I thought, the reviews looked good and the premise was intriguing Oh yes I should say that Katie's Hellion is part of a trilogy called 'Rhyn Trilogy' and a quick surf has shown that book two isn't finished yet.
I've sat here tonight trying to understand what exactly it is about this book that I loved so much and I think it's a combination of several things. An intriguing storyline, a likeable hero and heroine and the writing style of the author. She also created a heroine that questioned and rallied and didn't just accept her fate and I like that. Oh, and the secondary characters were fab, I want them all to have their own stories! In the end all this worked so well and I read, read, read, desperate to know what happened.
She left me on a freaking cliffhanger though! Now don't get me wrong Katie's Hellion was not without faults. The complex world Lizzy has created took a little while to get my head around and I felt like she could have explained it a whole lot better and moved the reader along with her a whole lot easier.
The beginning was also a little rushed and she glossed over the heroine's emotions a little I felt. I'd have liked a bigger build up, but then I'm a build up kinda girl. What else? Well some parts were a little repetitive, phrases and whatnot and the sex scenes were sweet rather than smoking--but then this is billed as suitable for YA, so I mustn't complain.
Overall I love it, just in case you haven't picked up on that yet, and it is a clear 5 hearts. I WANT more, more, more!!! I say this, because it is clearly what Katie was written to be, or at least I hope she was; a character that flat can only hope to be a one-size-fits-all girl, especially when coupled with a man for whom she cannot contain her overwhelming lust.
A staple, so far as I am concerned, in non-Mary Sue popularised fantasy romance novels. Katie has her flaws, as do all of the characters, I can see that.
The author has clearly tried to steer away from the virtuous girl with a dark past she is trying to hide from also a fantasy romance staple , but in doing so, Katie has minimal depth.
Hell, even the history the mysterious Ancients gave to her had more depth. I mean, seriously, this chick just stands there and takes everything that is thrown at her and then goes back to the dick that caused it.
Sibling rivalry, genetics and contentious natures keep the brothers warring, arguing and distrusting each other. While going about their usual immortal ancient duties they find an immortal ancient mate living among humans. Though the first located mate should go to the eldest brother, Kris, and couple her power with his, the wickedest brother, Sasha, is determined to keep that from happeni actually 4. Though the first located mate should go to the eldest brother, Kris, and couple her power with his, the wickedest brother, Sasha, is determined to keep that from happening.
Both brothers pursue the immortal ancient mate with mixed results. Rhyn, the youngest and most uncontrollably powerful and volatile of the immortal brothers is given a stay from death and temporary freedom from Sasha's hellish prison. Death is also willing to give him a second chance provided Rhyn will care for and take the immortal ancient mate as his own. Katie Young has no idea what's going on but after a hellish morning, her day becomes confusing and maddening as she tries to figure out what happened to reality.
No matter that immortals, death dealers, vampires, demons and who knows what else are after her, Katie is determined she's not going to be a simpering, whimpering human cowering in the corner. My taste was well served by the leads and some of the less savory secondary characters. After an exciting start, this read went off the rails a bit for me and I sometimes didn't know who was speaking as if pieces may have been missing.
I think it was because Rhyn instantly made a mark and then disappeared for a while. This was rectified with his reappearance and this reader was happy indeed.
Ford's work is new to me the writing style showed a fun flair and was a good premise and world. This reader's foremost thought on the final page was this was yet another delicious read languishing in TBR land way too long!
Katie is your average American girl, 22 years old, down on her luck and unsure what she wants to do with the remaining of her life. Rhyn is an Ainchant immortals entice to live the rest of his immortal days in hell, governed by his brother Sasha, hunted by his other brothers due to his inability to control his powers. Katie gets flung into the immortal world suddenly leaving her head spinning and landing her in hell with the scariest creature she's ever seen, Rhyn. As the fight for humanity heats up in a new take on good versus evil, Katie is the key to saving all of man kind while Rhyn is sworn to protect her. I was reeled in within the first paragraph and save for the need to eat and sleep, I could not put the book down.
The bedroom scenes were a bit tame for my taste but Ms Ford is forgiven as the book was so intense I didn't pay it much mind. I give this book a solid 4. At one point I actually cried and 2 sentences later I was laughing. I cannot wait to read the next book!! Loved this book!! The only catch about this book is you really have to read at least half of it to really get sucked into this interesting world of immortals.
I was frustrated in the beginning because I really was kind of confused taking in this whole new world. The immortals are not your typical "vampires" or "werewolves" or whatever. The author Lizzy Ford really creates something new and interesting and I think that the reason it takes so long for the plot to really begin is because the reader Loved this book!!
The author Lizzy Ford really creates something new and interesting and I think that the reason it takes so long for the plot to really begin is because the reader needs quite a bit of background information. That being said I instantly took a liking to Katie. She is sassy and not afraid to speak her mind even if it seems to land her in quite a bit of trouble.
She is a little spitfire. Although vulnerable due to her mortality she unwillingly is submerged into the world of the immortals and constantly proves how brave she is. Rhyn on the other hand is cocky and stubborn and has more animalistic than human tendencies.
Alone they are outcasts, but together Another really good entry from Lizzy Ford. The more I read her stuff the more I like it.
This is the first of a trilogy. This book is setting the stage; we have good character development and an interesting plot. Others have said that the story starts off slow I would not say it starts off slow as much as I would say that this is a book that could have a LOT of depth of characters written or added in.
And I have a feeling that is what book 2 and 3 are for. I suspect we will not get full closure Another really good entry from Lizzy Ford. I suspect we will not get full closure on things such as the importance of Toby until book 3.
We are left with our own imagination as to what the characters look like, what the castle looks like etc.
So be ready to use your imagination to fill the void. Again this is a trilogy, and the ending is abrupt. Book 2, Katie's Hope which I just started reading takes off where this one left off. Recommend this book as a read. Easy to follow. Clear concise language. It's refreshing to see a story plot that's unique. I found Katie's Character to be quite strong, especially when facing all the changes to her world as she knows it, and then going to Hell There is so much more to this book than Characters.
The story dr Excellent. The story draws you in, and has you Cheering for one of the 'Bad guys' Rhyn. Don't want to give too much of the story away. Get a copy, and treat your brain to wonderful book! This book is a keeper! The story draws Excellent. I feel sorry for Katie when she's bragged into other side of the world, she's weak in her human body, but she's strong inside. The bravest, weirdest of all times. I like Kris for his political views and the de this is far from book genres I usually read, but it made me keep reading until I finished the book!
I like Kris for his political views and the determination to rule the world in order to keep the peace for humanities and balance the world. Hope He can managed when their elder brother and their father was dead-dead for good! I liked it!
It was a bit odd in the beginning for me, but I got into the story line. It's an age-old plot basis about the ever-present battle between good and evil. Honestly, it's the first book that's categorized as a "fantasy" book that I've liked, and finished. The 2nd book won't be out until next month This series reminds me of a mix between Ione's Demonica series and Moning's Fever series. I like Katie and Rhyn together. I hope they can work it out. I really like Gabriel's character.
I'm skeptical as to what happened to the older brother. It was a little too glossed over. I look forward to seeing how this trilogy is resolved. When I think it isn't possible for Lizzy to get better, she does! Thank You! Gabriel, lover to Death, helped sentence his friend Rhyn to Hell for something he didn't deserve.
Death says that Rhyn will have to die to save humanity but that a woman destined to be his mate can change his fate. Gabriel delivers Rhyn his immortal powers and a book on how to care for humans. Katie is having a really bad morning, she is pulled over for driving two miles over the speed Katie's Hellion Book I, Rhyn Trilogy by Lizzy Ford This book was gifted to me for an honest review. Katie is having a really bad morning, she is pulled over for driving two miles over the speed limit and with a broken tail light.
Then a child she doesn't know follows her and everyone insists that he is her son. Katie is a pill popping, whiskey swilling year-old and she is supposed to have a 5-year-old son. When Katie left her apartment that morning, she didn't have a son, after meeting Toby for the first time and returning with him she finds that her apartment has been transformed with toys, drawings, furniture and pictures as if he belonged there, though Katie has no memory of him.
Katie's sister says she is having amnesia issues and should call her doctor. Gabriel, the death dealer follows Katie and hangs around her apartment freaking her out. He tells her that she wasn't supposed to remember her life before Toby showed up. But Katie is an immortal mate, an Ancient's mate and immune to immortal magic. It makes you valuable and dangerous. If our enemies find you, they can take your blood and modify the creatures who work for them to make them immune to us. I was fascinated by the world building and Lizzy Ford's voice.
I liked how flawed Katie was, which made her more interesting. Katie is kidnapped and thrown into Hell in the cell right across from Rhyn. Once Rhyn claims Katie things start getting exciting. Poor Katie has a really hard time associating with these immortal demonic creatures. They are really rough with her and it seems like every two pages she is bloody and beaten. But she is tough and never stops the whiskey swilling and wise cracking.
I really liked the intimacy between Rhyn and Katie, they are both so broken and flawed. Rhyn starts to thaw and care for Katie at the same time Katie wants to give him up and his world.
The immortal world is too dangerous for Katie, she wants her humdrum existence back. But Rhyn is willing to fight for her and keep her safe, he just doesn't know how. This is the first book in the trilogy and I hope that by the end of the third book Katie and Rhyn end up together, happy and safe. I like the two of them and I definitely like them together.
Katie and Rhyn can save each other, I just know it, if they can figure out a way to keep Katie alive and Rhyn from destroying the world. But if it was easy, it wouldn't be interesting. Jan 23, Ashleyjo added it. If I had to describe this book with two words, it would be mass confusion.
I opened this book and immediately felt like I was Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, but without any nice creatures to help me figure out where the hell I was or what the hell was going on. Confusing, weird, bumfuk Egypt Hell, if you asked me my name right now, I might not know. Yes, it's really that confusing! Seriously, the book feels like it started in the middle of some other book that the author wrote in imaginary ink.
Around half way through the book, the identities of everyone start to make a little sense, but then the damn characters are acting like schizophrenic, sociopaths. Oh the crazy shiz in this book Nice Him: You're a dumb blood monkey I like you better when your quiet You're weak and foolish I think I'm falling in love with you. Romantic, huh?
Bottom line: Despite the majority of the book being about immortal mates, there's nothing, and I do mean nothing, remotely romantic, swoony, or sexy about this book. The male MC degrades the female at every turn. The female Mc is constantly writing stupid checks with her mouth that her arse can't cash, but then turns around and submits to the male MC at every turn; again, it's illogical behavior.
You'll most likely keep reading if you start just so that you can try to make sense of the craziness, but I can assure you that it's a lost cause. Paperback, ebook My Rating: Already running late for work, she is pulled over by a cop happy to fill his quota just with her inconsequential crimes. When fate lands her in prison with one of the Seven brothers, Rhyn, she is forced to accept that life as she knew it is no longer a reality. Katie finds herself in a twisted relationship with the black sheep of the Ancient family, who claims her as his mate, both in desire and for revenge.
Will he be able to protect her from all those who want to use her to destroy the world? And will Katie ever find a way to trust Rhyn? Holy bad guys! Yeah, he can be a real jerk sometimes, but every single one of us thinks if we could just work on him a little, we could chip away all that rough exterior and find that soft heart hiding underneath.
Must be the dark, quiet, mysterious qualities he possesses. That and it seems he knows how to handle the kids as well. Torture and I cannot even begin to do this justice. So my advice, is not to sit in the world you feel comfortable in, but jump into Katie's world and live through her. Your enjoyment will be so much better. Have patience with this amazing story. The questions that you will form, will all be answered in time.
